Event review: Girl Geek Tea Party #33 @ MadLab, Sunday 28th July 2013

We had a great turn out of girl geeks of all ages (and a few boy geeks too) on Sunday, all eager to get started on the Tea Party task – creating a rabbit or monster soft toy complete with its own light-up LED eyes.

Instructions and patterns had been lovingly crafted by our very own Angie Chan (@angieokchan on Twitter). Angie is a graphic designer and a dedicated girl geek – she also created our new website banner.

Chief girl geek Katie (@stecks on Twitter) kicked off the afternoon and everyone got familiar with the kit to make the finished toys – this consisted of felt for the outsides and conductive thread, battery and battery-holder to complete the circuit for the LEDs on the insides.

It was fantastic to see some crafty parents among the group sharing their making skills with budding geeks. Angie’s instructions were so easy to follow that guests of all ages got really stuck in – we had quite a job persuading folks to take a break until a generous guest pulled out a Percy Pig cake and tools were downed for just a few moments.

The gallery below contains snaps from myself (@ZoeEBreen on Twitter), Angie, and a couple from guests who posted pictures of their finished toys on our Facebook page.

Our next Tea Party will be a gaming themed all-dayer (10am-5pm) @ MadLab on Sunday 25th August, featuring tea, cake, board games, video games, making games, crafts and talks. Find out more here.
