For September we’ll be running a basic intro to HTML and CSS!
HTML is the basic language that makes up websites and web applications. It describes and forms the underlying structure of webpages: titles, lists, inserting images, forming links, all this can be done via HTML.
CSS is the basic way of styling a website. You can set the colour of not only the background of your page, but the colour and size of fonts, headers, set the way lists and bulleted lists look and much more
Using CSS and HTML together you can build a functional website. We’ll be going through some example code and then adding and modifying it to start you on your website creation journey
Optional advanced level:
Github is a popular platform for storing code in a way that is sharable. Github also has a free hosting option called Github pages. Depending on how we get on, we can upload your HTML and CSS files to your GitHub account and you’ll end up with a public facing, live website that you can then continue to learn to edit and grow, using free resoruces around the web.
Note: To do this section, please sign up for a Github account before coming to the event.
You can only have one GitHub pages project per GitHub account. If you know that you already have a GitHub pages site, you will not be able to get another site on the same account.
- A laptop
- The files found in this link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/d2ewk2dlxyquo6v/AABS-wwjBm4rU5V3MHA2s5sMa?dl=0
- A github account (if you wish to set up a github pages website)
- OPTIONAL: We’ll be using Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) to edit the files. These programs come installed on your laptop. If you prefer you can download a more advanced text editor such as Sublime (available for Mac, Windows, Linux) or Notepad++ (Windows only)
And on top of all of this we’ll have plenty of tea, coffee, and cake to keep those coding fingers fuelled! We will be on the bottom floor of Madlab, which is wheelchair accessible, and there will be some power sockets available.
